At SicilyWest by Mario, every journey begins with a conversation — a personal consultation where dreams, desires, and family dynamics blend together to create an unforgettable adventure. This was exactly the case when a lively Italian family booked their Sicily Stay Concierge session through our website.

During our call, it became clear: this dynamic group — a vibrant grandmother (65), an enthusiastic grandfather (68), and two curious grandchildren (11 and 4) — longed to explore the wild heart of Sicily, its untouched nature, its ancient myths, and timeless legends.

With this vision in mind, I, Professor Mario Figlioli — also known as Mario IGT — carefully crafted a two-night, three-day itinerary designed to ignite wonder in every member of the family.

The Oldest Oak in Europe – The Ancient Soul of Niscemi

Our adventure began in the heart of the Sicilian countryside, inside a protected nature reserve near Niscemi. There, amidst rolling hills and fields bathed in golden light, we encountered the majestic "Quercia di Niscemi" — believed to be the oldest oak tree in Europe.

Standing before this colossal giant, with branches stretching out like the arms of a mythological titan, I shared with the family the legends woven through centuries. It is said that Greek warriors, during the expedition to Troy, once sought shelter beneath these very branches, and that today, benevolent nature spirits still guard its ancient roots.

The children listened wide-eyed, gently pressing their hands against the rough bark as if greeting a living relic of time.

Mosaics and Memories – The Timeless Elegance of Piazza Armerina

From the embrace of nature, we journeyed to the splendid town of Piazza Armerina, famed for the extraordinary Villa Romana del Casale. Here, surrounded by dazzling mosaics that have survived the passing millennia, we walked through a world of emperors, hunters, and mythological heroes.

As we explored the intricate scenes, I brought the mosaics to life with stories of Roman gods and ancient adventures. The children were particularly fascinated by the famous "Bikini Girls" — depictions of ancient Roman athletes that still celebrate female strength and elegance across centuries.

First Overnight Stay – In a Historic Sicilian House

As evening fell, we were welcomed by a beautifully restored historic house near Piazza Armerina, where every stone seemed to whisper stories of Sicily’s rural past.Surrounded by olive groves and the gentle scents of the countryside, the family enjoyed a warm and authentic dinner: fresh-baked bread, artisanal cheeses, homemade preserves, rich extra virgin olive oil, and a hearty plate of traditional Sicilian caponata.

The laughter around the table blended with the evening's breeze, creating memories already rooted deep in their hearts.

The Breath of the Volcano – The Mystical Slopes of Mount Etna

The next day, our adventure continued northwards, tracing the majestic outline of Mount Etna.We paused near the stunning Alcantara Gorges, where clear waters carve through ancient basalt formations — dramatic sculptures created by the marriage of fire and water.

Here, I shared the legend of Hephaestus, the god of fire, who forged weapons for the gods deep within the volcanic heart of Etna. The children's imaginations raced as they tossed stones into the waters, pretending to summon the ancient blacksmith himself.

The Chestnut of the Hundred Horses – The Living Legend of Sant'Alfio

No mythological journey through Sicily would be complete without visiting one of its oldest living witnesses:the "Castagno dei Cento Cavalli" — the Chestnut Tree of the Hundred Horses.

Legend tells of Queen Joanna of Aragon, who during a fierce storm, found shelter under this mighty tree with her entourage of a hundred knights.Seated on the soft grass, I told this story to the family, as the wind gently stirred the ancient branches, as if whispering the Queen's tale once again.

Second Overnight Stay – Between Nature and History in Alcantara

Our second night unfolded in a welcoming country house near Alcantara, surrounded by lush greenery and the timeless beauty of Sicily. The evening brought another feast of local flavors: "Pasta alla Norma," wild fennel sausages, and a rainbow of fresh seasonal vegetables, served with the warmth of Sicilian hospitality.

The Magical Sweet Treat – A Delicious Discovery

Before concluding our journey, we stumbled upon a hidden culinary treasure:a delicate traditional pastry known as “Telaizato,” crafted with fine flour, almond paste, and rich jam.

The family fell in love with this timeless delight — so much so that they stocked up with boxes to bring home, ensuring that the taste of Sicily would continue to sweeten their memories long after their return.
